THE AZTEC CALENDAR

Aztec Calendar : Calendario AztecaThe "aztecas" based their existence on their religion and their main god was "Tonatiuh" (The Sun). The Aztec Calendar was sculpted between the year 1449 and 1479 during Axayacatl's period of government to venerate Tonatiuh.

It has a diameter of 3.54 meters and weights more than 24 tons. It is also named "Piedra del Sol" (Sun's Stone) or Jicara de Aguilas. It was found on December 17, 1790 in Mexico City's Zocalo and now it is being exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Chapultepec in Mexico City.

The figures sculptured in this piece of art represent important information such as the sun’s formation, the order of the planets, and the creation of the earth in its different stages. It has eight circles, seven in the front part of the stone and one on the edge.

The central circle has Tonatiuh's figure in it. Tonatiuh is the protector of all the creation. The legend says that the sun that is lighting our civilization is the fifth one. The other four suns died with all past civilizations and only one man and one woman survived.

The second circle contains information about the different stages of Aztec civilization.

The third circle has twenty spaces corresponding to the twenty days of their month. The year in the Aztec culture had 365 days, divided into eighteen moths of twenty days each, plus five additional days that were added to the last month. Those five days were dedicated to rest.

The fourth circle has a calendar used by the priest for prophecies and for agricultural purposes.

The fifth and sixth circles represent heaven and earth and to unify them there is sunlight in a "V" form.

The seventh circle contains two fire serpents.

On the eighth circle on the edge of the stone there are some symbols that represent stars, sunlight and the planet Venus.
